World Building
World Building is the process of defining the universe your story takes place in. A well-defined world constrains the stories you can tell — which is a feature, not a bug. Constraints drive creativity and prevent episodes from feeling disconnected.
Rules: What are the laws of this world — physical, social, magical? What can and cannot happen?
History: What happened before the story begins? Key events that shaped the world and its characters.
Atmosphere: The emotional texture of the world — its technology level, social structures, dangers, and beauty.
For ongoing series, revisit and expand the world definition after each episode as new details emerge from the writing.
Write a world definition covering rules, history, and atmosphere. Optionally create a World Building swimlane on the project timeline to track world-expanding events.
